Son’s shaving for the first time? Here’s how!

Is your son hitting puberty? Have you noticed new stubs on your son’s face? Chances are, his ready for his first shave!

You might be freaking out over some questions, such as: How do I teach my son to shave? How often does he need to shave? What if he cut himself? What kind of razor should I buy for him? Here are some tips for your son to have a smooth and successful shaving experience:

What kind of razor should I buy for him?

Shaving Tip 1: When should my son start shaving?

It might be time to teach your son to shave when they hit puberty or the preteen years. Some start to shave as early as 12 or even younger. When you see long hairs pop-up on his upper lip or chin or he gets a peachy fuzz on his face, you can go ahead and teach him to shave. Even if your son wants to grow a beard, tell him that it’s important to shave around the edges to get a clean look.

Shaving Tip 2: What kind of razor should I use?

Get a razor which is good quality and works well for your son. It comes with different forms: electric and disposable.

  • Electric razor: Electronic razors are convenient, but it might not shave closely as a disposable razor can. It is recommended to choose the one with a flexible head that could be in line with the contours of your face.
  • Disposable razor: If you select a disposable razor, don’t forget to apply the shaving cream or gel on your face before shaving. They have the lubricating effect that reduces the risk of nicking or cutting yourself. There are many types of creams and gels that you could choose from. Take time to find that’s right for you.

Once you’ve picked the perfect razor, the next step is choosing the blade for it. There’s no one size fits all, so try both the single edge blades and double edge blades to see what works best, remember, a sharp blade means your son is less likely to get hurt.

A better quality blade usually equates to a more cleaner and straightforward shave without leaving stubs behind. Results which may not be achieved by a cheaper blade.

Shaving Tip 3: When is the best time to shave?

The best time to shave is straight out of the shower. Taking a warm bath or splash warm water will hydrate the skin and stimulate the skin’s pore, leading to easier and stress free contact with razor.

Keep your razor clean and sharp

You may ask, ‘Could I just put the razor at the bathroom with a random place?’ The answer is NO.

The bathroom is the easiest place to breed bacteria due to the moisture and wetness. To keep your son’s razor performing at its best, you must know how to store them:

  • Tuck your razor in a dry space instead of setting it down in the shower, like in a MIZO cover
  • Rinse the razor with hot water
  • Replace the razor after 6-8 shaves
